6 steps to creating an ideal learning space for your child

It's been a few weeks now since we have all had to adapt our home environments to learning and working from home. Now is a good time to take stock and ensure the environment is encouraging great learning and focus.

Create a ‘zone’

Creating a set space for your child to learn in will help them to differentiate between study time and time to relax/play. Helping them to realise that this is a place to learn will help to keep them from getting distracted and encourage them to focus on the task at hand.

  • Don't use the bed or the couch
  • Move away from the learning area for lunch and other breaks

Get them connected

Having a stable connection is vital to your child's learning experience. If possible, use an ethernet cable so that they are ‘hard wired’ to your router. This will allow your child to keep connected so they don’t miss anything. Alternatively, ensure your child is in an area of the property with a strong WiFi signal. You can use our Mesh Kit to help with this if you have a patchy coverage across the property.

  • Plug into the router where possible
  • Don't have other wireless devices in between the laptop/device your child is using and the router
  • Disconnect devices that aren't being used

Remove clutter

Having a space filled with clutter and ‘stuff’ will create distractions and make it harder for them to concentrate on learning. Minimal items also help to create a feeling of calm which will encourage better learning and less stress. If your child needs space to draw or write, spending time clearing things out of their way will only distract them from learning and create unnecessary stress.

  • Remove needless paper
  • Throw out any rubbish
  • Organise items into containers, such as pens
  • Tidy away cables

Have supplies close to hand

As much as it is important to clear the space of clutter, making sure everything they need is available to them. Having to step away from the desk to grab a charger or textbook will mean they lose focus on the task. Thinking ahead of time and getting the area set up for the following day is super important to create a great learning environment and will help to keep things calm in the morning, avoiding a last minute scramble for supplies.

Personalise the space

Encourage your child to help you set up their workspace. Using drawings and learning prompts such as posters that your child has helped pick out will create a space that they feel comfortable in. It's important that this is a happy place for them to be so they can feel ready to study and comfortable in their surroundings.

  • Stationary organisers
  • Fun stationary
  • Personalised flask

Create good lighting

Having an area which is well lit will reduce tiredness and eye strain. Ensuring your child can make the most out of their time spent learning. It has been proven that having the correct lighting can increase learning by up to 20% so it is much more important than you might think.

  • Warm or yellow lighting helps you to relax and rest.
  • Natural lighting is the best all round solution that allows comfortable work.
  • Cold or white lighting is best for brightness and improves attention overall.
